Network and PC support technicians are ever more in demand in the UK, as companies rely heavily upon their knowledge and skills. Our country’s need for larger numbers of qualified personnel grows, as society becomes consistently more dependent upon PC’s in today’s environment.

A top of the range training course package will also offer fully authorised exam preparation packages.

Sometimes people can get confused by trying to prepare themselves with questions that aren’t recognised by the authorised examining boards. Sometimes, the phraseology can be quite different and it’s vital that you know this.

Mock exams are very useful in helping you build your confidence – then when the time comes for you to take the real thing, you will be much more relaxed.

Finding job security in this economic down-turn is problematic. Businesses frequently drop us from the workplace at a moment’s notice – as and when it suits them.

In actuality, security now only emerges through a rapidly rising market, driven by work-skills shortages. It’s this shortage that creates the right conditions for a secure marketplace – a much more desirable situation.

Looking at the Information Technology (IT) business, the recent e-Skills study highlighted an over 26 percent shortfall of skilled workers. Or, to put it differently, this reveals that the UK is only able to source 3 certified professionals for every four jobs in existence today.

Acquiring in-depth commercial computer qualification is thus a ‘Fast Track’ to realise a long-lasting as well as enjoyable career.

Unquestionably, it really is the very best time to consider retraining into the computer industry.

For the most part, the typical student doesn’t have a clue where to start with IT, or even which market they should be considering getting trained in.

Scanning lists of IT career possibilities is next to useless. The majority of us have no idea what our own family members do for a living – so we have no hope of understanding the subtleties of a particular IT career.

Reflection on several issues is vital if you want to reveal the right solution that will work for you:

* Which type of individual you are – what tasks do you get enjoyment from, plus of course – what makes you unhappy.

* Are you looking to realise an important dream – like being your own boss someday?

* Is the money you make further up on your wish list than some other areas.

* Considering all that the IT industry encapsulates, it’s important to be able to see what’s different.

* It makes sense to take in what is different for each individual training area.

For the average person, considering these areas will require meeting with an experienced pro that can explain things properly. And we don’t just mean the certifications – but the commercial expectations and needs of industry too.

An area that’s often missed by new students mulling over a new direction is that of ‘training segmentation’. Basically, this means the way the course is divided up for delivery to you, which vastly changes where you end up.

Students often think it makes sense (with most training taking 1-3 years to gain full certified status,) for a training company to release one module at a time, until you’ve passed all the exams. However:

How would they react if you didn’t complete each element at the proposed pace? Sometimes their preference of study order won’t be as easy as some other order of studying might.

To be straight, the best solution is to obtain their recommendation on the best possible order of study, but to receive all the materials up-front. Meaning you’ve got it all should you not complete it quite as quick as they’d want.

It is by using natural resources such as tidal or wind energy – collectively known as ‘Green Energy’ – that we could meet our daily energy needs. They are considered ‘Green’ because they are environmentally friendly. The older energy skill sets have had value for years, especially when we think of wind power and windmills. Regardless of this, we are mainly talking about using modern techniques to offer planet friendly and eco-efficient solutions.

It is the use of simple renewable energies such as Solar Thermal and Solar Water Heating Collectors, that suits the home environment. It is equipment such as Photovoltaic Panels (PV’s) that develop electricity through suitable roof-panels. Equally important is that of Biomass Energy – which includes Stoves, Fuel, Pellets and Boilers burning Wood. Then we have the ancient energy of the Sun and the heat that comes from it – now called Ground Source Heat Pumps. Considering items such as Wind Power and Hydro Turbines, we are finally getting to very old forms of energy production.

Solar Thermal Energy – By using different technologies, Solar Energy is effectively made up of two types of solar panels. As a first strategy, we have Solar Water Heating Collectors – which basically creates hot water from solar energy. Added to this is the generation of electricity from solar radiation – known as Photovoltaism, or more commonly Solar Electrical panels. To get the best results these panels need to be south facing at an angle of around 30 degrees from horizontal, and away from blockages.

With Solar Power being so common within the UK, it’s Solar Water Power that is most often used. With the capacity to deliver 50 percent plus of a household’s hot water requirement annually, Solar Water heating systems are crucial to energy in the UK. There are two options to fit these items. The first is to get a professional fit and the second is a DIY system, the first will cost around 2-5k and the second between 500 and 1500 pounds.

Biomass Energy and ‘Energy Crops’ – This is a ‘capture all’ phrase which includes all natural materials. e.g. Wood, straw and poultry litter – but nowadays also includes modern ‘Energy Crops’. It’s the ability of this power source to generate diverse forms of energy, such as heat and electricity, that makes this so adaptable. Indeed, within the European Markets, the UK has some of the leading levels of Biomass material at hand. It is the minimal C02 produced, alongside the actual energy production, that makes this attractive to the markets. As each tree felled, it is replaced by another. This helps to reduce the overall effect on C02.

By the growth of Short Rotation Crops (SRC), the UK is able to maximise the ‘Energy Crops’ return overall. Perennial grasses are also responsible for large quantities of dry matter. Municipal and Agricultural waste products are both little known, but essential materials to this field. Under normal agricultural activity, agricultural waste is a natural by-product. Whereas Municipal Waste is derived from wood or food – and can be used for biomass energy.

Geo-Thermal Energy Based Systems – Basically this is the warming of the Earth from the Sun – and is often used in the manufacture of warm water and electricity. By using the ground source temperature of approximately 12 degrees, we can either heat or cool buildings within the UK. Heat pumps are recognised as a very good form of power generation, generally giving back four units of energy for every one used. The energy generated by a heat source pump can in fact be considered 100 percent renewable, if the power to operate the pump comes from solar electrical panels or a wind turbine.

Wind Energy – An Update On Old Technology: When you consider the milling of grain and pumping of water, it is easy to see how long wind energy has been with us. Whether to your home or to a local grid, when the energy has been generated it must be delivered to a point of usage – and cannot be stored. The UK is considered as one of the best sources of wind generation within Europe. For the fact remains that, within the UK, we have the ability to generate 10 percent of our requirement from Wind Production – as opposed to the current value of only 1 percent. Frankly, electricity can be realised from as little as 2p per kWh – as opposed to the current level of 2-10 p per kWh. Due to this, we are looking at 6-9 months in total to cover the costs.

Then there is Hydropower – something within Europe that the UK excels in. Although new in its approach, the act of harnessing energy from water has been going on for a long time. That said, this type of energy can generate around 2 percent of the total electrical demand for the UK.

A hydropower system transforms the kinetic energy of the moving water into another type of energy by means of a turbine. By using a dam or a natural river drop, these turbines do not require water storage. It is by using the eroded national distribution systems, that allows for outdated sluices and dams to be used by techniques known as ‘Micro-Hydro’. Having said that, this process could still generate 200mW of the National Capacity. The capital cost of installing a micro-hydro system can run between 200 and 3000 pounds per kW of energy output.

It can be seen that the route to ‘Green Energy’ is growing considerably, especially in light of the need for increasing energy outputs throughout the Western World. The UK domestic market appears to be one of the core beneficiaries of this technology.

Once again, it is the Electrician and Plumbing trades that are set to capitalise on the domestic installation process. Grants and financial aid is also set to increase within the EEC and the UK – as ‘Green Energy’ gets ever higher status. This is a new industry – but getting the right certification can only improve job security and opportunities for the future. Look for combined electrical and plumbing training, with a key emphasis on practical green systems and installation.

Whatever the particular circumstances associated with a nation’s financial state, customers absolutely need proficient local plumbers. The construction sector has plainly slowed down, nonetheless work within household properties is without question thriving. Everybody is aware of someone who’s experienced a problem getting hold of a plumber each time they required one. In addition for sure as families develop their residences, they require the services provided by a first-rate plumber – to install their central heating for example. Which means training to be a plumbing technician may well just be the best career shift you could potentially make!

As life passes, most of your work may well arise on account of good words from satisfied clients – consistently look for recommendations! Your re-training company will take care of all of your trade abilities, nonetheless your approach and good manners are going to be right down to you. Plumbing business on occasion may come from the most unanticipated sources. It is actually dumbfounding just how much business is without a doubt sacrificed – because of sloppy thinking and general bad manners.

The great factor when it comes to domestic plumbing skillsets is they will set you up for a lifetime. Regardless of whether a residence is 10 years into it’s life or even a hundred years of age, it continually wants a water supply and a heating system! Emergency call-out work always makes you seem brilliant, plus every customer delights in a brand new en-suite or kitchen – and so just about every job might be very enjoyable. As you can imagine, you basically only need to undertake the actual work you would like to do, although in truth it is not a great approach to get overly fussy at the beginning!

Lots of people decide to get into domestic plumbing to allow them to become self-employed and therefore control their own destiny. It’s actually true to state that just about all people who get into the trade as adults get started doing work for themselves really effortlessly. Clearly this is practical once you look into the kind of need found in pretty much every community in the country. If you’re fairly handy, or it is really all totally new to you, when you are skilled and qualified there is certainly work to go for.

If you are about to head up your personal small business, you will need to have a better feel for the best way to do competitive quotes. You may choose to charge a price per day, or a price just for the job. No matter which you do, be sure you have covered all your running costs. Even though this is probably a little bit complicated at first, virtually all plumbing engineers get on top of it very quickly. A number of the main commercial re-training organisations can give recommendations on this subject.

As you complete the plumbing training programme, you will learn information on common plumbing techniques along with the key principles you ought to know. Yet when you maximise your skill set you’ll be able to take on several more jobs. Preferred tutorials teach domestic electricians’ labour, tiling, unvented hot water storage systems, kitchen installations, energy efficiency, water reg’s and indeed gas. If you’re in the market to move professions but also need reputable, well-paid long lasting employment, domestic plumbing could just be the ideal choice for you.

You do not necessarily need to get to grips with every subject immediately, but learn a few more competencies as your business develops. Anything you undertake will undoubtedly be a whole lot more profitable. Clients will be more comfortable if they have only one person to refer to – it’s considerably more efficient compared to struggling to facilitate several trades.

You can do C & G training in a range of plumbing-related courses in both further education colleges and private training companies. Young people coming out of school or sixth form college will traditionally go to further education college full time – then get their employment know-how and NVQs. But more mature career changers like to hang onto their current employment whilst they study part time. That’s exactly why a lot of commercial training colleges are flourishing, that cater for job changers who more often than not only want domestic training. Their costs might be greater, but yet in reality they are more cost effective for the individual planning to work on their own within a predominantly home-based sector.

As a guideline, people working for industrial plumbers will, no doubt, do approximately thirty seven to forty hours, week-days only. Home-based plumbers would be better never to restrict their hours too strictly though. It could be rather complicated for some clients to stay at home throughout the day – waiting for a local plumber, which means they are quite often ready to pay a lot more to get night time visits.

They are considered ‘Green’ because they are environmentally friendly. It’s interesting to note that in some instances we’re actually travelling back in time to utilise some of the older energy skill sets e.g. Wind Power (Windmills etc.) But in the main, this is the process of utilising modern technology to provide eco-efficient and planet-friendly alternatives.

In the home environment, one can see examples such as Solar Thermal and Solar Water Heating Collectors. To gain electricity from roof panels you would need solar electrical panels (PV’s). Following on from this is a process known as Biomass Energy – which includes Boilers burning wood and other fuels. We now also have Ground Source Heat Pumps – which draw out the heat left by the Sun. Finally, we have two of the most traditional forms of energy generation that have gone through some resurgence over the last few years; these being Wind Power, Wind Turbines and Hydropower (including Water Wheels.)

Solar Energy Systems: Also known as Solar Energy, this mainly uses two, albeit different types of solar panels to get the desired results. Initially, there is the process of obtaining hot water from the Sun via Solar Water Heating Collectors. Furthermore, there are the Solar Electrical Panels (more correctly known as Photovoltaic heat collectors) which transform solar radiation into electricity. Obviously situated away from blockages such as chimneys etc., these Solar Panels need to be mounted on south facing roofs at an angle of 30 degrees from the horizontal.

Within this discipline, Solar Water Power is often regarded as the most popular form of Solar Energy within the UK. These systems are very efficient – and can deliver 50 percent of a household’s hot water requirement annually. The typical cost for installation ranges from 500-1500 pounds for a DIY system, all the way through to 2-5k for a professional fit.

Biomass Energy Based Systems: Historically, this has come from plants and animals, though nowadays this also includes new genetcially engineered ‘energy crops’. Considering its ability to produce energy in the form of heat and electricity, this type of energy is extremely flexible. Furthermore, within the European Markets, the UK is one of the central producers of Biomass fuels. Considering all this, and the relative lack of C02 produced, makes the whole process highly green overall. Much of the UK wood crop is sustainable, in order to ensure that C02 produced during any heating process is absorbed.

A process called Short Rotation Coppice (SRC), utilising trees such as Willow and Poplar, is used to meet the demands of such ‘Energy Crops’. Dry matter is also very sought after – and perennial grasses are a good source of this. Within this process also sits the lesser known Agricultural and Municipal Wastes. Agricultural Waste is commonly formed as a by-product of traditional agricultural work. Of equal importance is Municipal Waste, which comes from recycyled wood and food.

Systems Based On Geo-Thermal Energy: Used in the generation of both warm water and electricity, this energy mainly comes from the Sun and heats the Earth. Using the ground temperature of around 12 degrees in the UK – we can both heat and cool buildings. Generally, items such as Heat Pumps are thought of as very effective, as they produce four units of energy for every one that is used for generation. A greate return of energy (sometimes almost 100 percent) is produced – because heat source pumps can operate in-line with wind turbines and solar electrical panels.

Systems Based On Wind Energy: When you consider the milling of grain and pumping of water, it is easy to see how long wind energy has been with us. Whether to your home or to a local grid, when the energy has been generated it must be delivered to a point of usage – and cannot be stored. In fact, the UK has the largest wind resource within Europe. Although we only utilise 1 percent of the current electricity capability from wind – we do have the ability to create 10 percent. Overall, electricity could be generated from as low as 2p per kWh – instead of the current 2-10 p per kWh. Because of this, it is estimated that it takes between half a year to three quarters of a year to cover the installation costs.

Finally, we have Hydropower; an area in which the UK does well within Europe. Having said that, the art of using energy from moving water (just like wind power) is very traditional. In total, this could produce something like 2 percent of all electricity required in the UK.

By using a turbine, a Hydropower system can transfer the kinetic energy of moving water into another form. By using a dam or a natural river drop, these turbines do not require water storage. ‘Micro-Hydro’ however, uses the dam and sluice systems that have been made redundant by the larger national distributions. Although a lesser known form of electricity output, this process could supply 200mW of UK demand. A micro-hydro system like this would be expected to cost between 200 and 3,000 pounds per kW of the energy.

Because of the energy need of the Western World, we are now seeing a rapid rise in ‘Green Energy’. Within the UK and mainly the domestic sector, we are well placed to take advantage of the schemes above.

Once again, it is the Electrician and Plumbing trades that are set to capitalise on the domestic installation process. Grants and financial aid is also set to increase within the EEC and the UK – as ‘Green Energy’ gets ever higher status. As a new industry, there are a range of new certificates to gain. To cover both ends, you could consider electrical or plumbing training along with green systems.

But a fireplace is dangerous as well as beautiful. As long as you have the right tools and accessories you can reduce the risk to your furniture and flooring and make it easier to get and keep the fire burning well.

A fireplace screen is simply a mesh panel that goes in front of the fireplace opening. They are used with wood burning fireplaces rather than natural gas ones. This is because the primary purpose of a fireplace screen is to prevent sparks and burning embers from popping out of the fire and into your home. Most fireplaces are built with a hearth. This is a patch of fire resistant tiling or stone that extends out from the front of the fireplace into the room. However, this does not prevent stray sparks from flying out past the reach of the hearth.

Fireplace screens need to be stable and made of metal that is fairly thick and hard. You want to make sure that there is no chance that the screen will fall over if it is accidentally bumped or moved so that you can get at the fire inside the fireplace. You also want to make sure that a very hot fire will not melt or warp the frame of the screen since this can make it unusable. It should not be lined with a solid liner since this can keep necessary air flow from reaching the fire and allowing it to burn properly.

There are a range of different styles you can choose from. The first thing to decide is how many panels you want your screen to have. There are fireplace screens with one panel. These are often a simple piece of mesh held in a metal frame. There are also three panel screens. These have a broad central panel that spans the front of the fireplace, and two side panels which keep it propped up. Often, three panel fireplace screens are some of the most traditionally styled ones.

There are fireplace screens with more than three panels. A four panel screen is the same basic shape as a three panel screen, but has had the front panel divided up into two smaller panels. There are five or even six paneled screens. There are even fan shaped screens where there are six or more panels forming the fan, which sits on a base in front of the fireplace. A good fireplace screen is not so heavily decorated that you cannot see the fire behind it.

A fireplace screen should also provide a convenient way to access the fire that is burning. You want to make sure that you can draw the screen aside to poke or prod the fire, or you should be able to move part of the screen easily. You need to keep in mind that if the screen is made of metal (which most of them are) it may tend to get quite warm because it is exposed to the heat of the fire for long periods of time.

Finding a fireplace screen is not difficult. They are sold in stores and on websites. You can find them in home improvement shops, furniture stores and fireplace supply stores as well. It may be easy to find them but picking the right one can be a hard decision to make. By thinking about your needs and how you use your fireplace, it should not be hard to make the choice that is right for you.

Jeff Bridges has always enjoyed the warmth received in front of the fire he currently runs a website where he sells fireplace screens. There they promote many differently styles, colors, and designs of fireplace screens.

Manual dexterity is a required skill that all workmen need to be able to fix locks as well as pick them. Although this trade seems to be about keys and learning the way key cylinders work there is a lot more to it than meets the eye. It is also about mechanical and electronics. Mathematics is also an important element of study within this type of work. A Staten Island locksmith needs to know all areas of their trade before they can go out to work.

It is essential that a locksmith carries on training throughout their career as things continually change over the years. With new technology introducing products on the market it must be understood how these work. Unless a product is thoroughly understood then it cannot be fitted accurately. The career can take a person down many roads and is very diverse.

It is essential to study and remain updated with all the new technologies. Many younger people gain an apprenticeship working and overshadowing those who are experts. An apprenticeship can teach all the essential elements of this trade. Often whilst working the person will also attend college maybe one day a week. They will be required to show they understand all areas of the trade and take part in examinations before qualifying.

As a student you would probably learn to observe and look inside many lock cylinders as a way of understanding how the majority of standard locks work inside. Understanding lock cylinders is important when a person needs to learn how to pick a lock. Lock preparation teaches guidelines for preparing the lock cylinder for picking. This will also help with learning what each tool is used for.

Picking as well as studying all approaches to this must be taught. Code cutting as well as key copying will be looked at in advance. All business needs such as setting up a company as a locksmith and working with customers will be studied. Studies can be intense and covered over many years.

Another important area if the art of impressioning and this can also teach the student how to make a blank key using only a file. It is hard to believe that this is possible, but as the student progresses they will learn many aspects of the locksmith they might never before thought possible. Impressioning really is a whole branch in itself and is mastered by true, professional locksmiths.

Today, it is even possible to train online as well as offline. No matter where you decide to study this is an extensive trade that can take you down many paths. There is so much to learn and it is possible to specialise in certain areas. You will learn all about locks and how they work. There is also the area of keys, alarms and security systems. Repairing systems as well as manufacturing them is all taught on courses. Throughout the course you will be required to show that you understand each area. If you are taking an apprenticeship you will need to show understanding as well. Not only will you have to show that you understand how each area works you will also have to show that you can work safely and reliably.

The lack of Plumbers in the UK has led to salaries of 30-70k p.a. being exhibited. Is this really a fib – or is this in fact accurate? Without a doubt, a fully experienced Plumber can command salaries of such levels. To be fair, the higher earnings of 70-100k p.a. are generally for those working within the self-employed field.

To be fair being with a regular employer often results in working from Monday to Friday, 9am to 6pm as standard. Salaries of between 15k – 30k p.a. are easily achievable and will include typical benefits such as holiday pay and sickness allowance – what you’d generally expect from any UK employed status. That said it is by working longer than typically 9am to 6pm, Mon to Fri that self employed people achieve higher incomes than those adopting a traditional approach. This is more common in the domestic market where self employed plumbers often have to work evenings and weekends to suit those clients that work during the week.

There is also the issue of self-employment itself – which definitely suits some people more than it suits others. The inclusion of key elements such as utilising good ‘business sense’, covering areas such as advertising and marketing and getting your own cost-per-hour correct is integral to the picture. To be fair most self-employed people will have to prepare for additional costs including those relating to legal and accountancy fees as well as those of transport and material usage. While these costs can mount up, so too do the benefits, however the costs should always remain a smaller part of the income generated. And the benefits nearly always far outweigh the downsides!

From the outset it’s the double offer of teaching them from experience and covering most of their working needs that Student Entrants are looking for in employment. On the other hand, the Self Employed Entrant needs to increase their list plumbing credentials as soon as possible. That noted the main drive of self-employed workers is towards the ‘domestic’ market and not that of the commercial sector. (Not all of them, but the main do!)

The certification units, needed by each part of the industry keeps a similarity in terms of Plumbing education. A key debate however comes into play when considering the issue of NVQ’s (SVQ’s in Scotland.)

From the outset, it is clear that the Self Employed Entrant does not depend as much upon the NVQ’s as the Student Entrant. The Self Employed Entrant will regularly employ a range of certifications in order to meet the needs of their client’s requirements from the beginning. Certainly, it is the qualifications aimed at meeting the needs of the typical household-based client base that self-employed persons need to focus upon. Having covered off the key elements of training within the college, the Student Entrant usually then enters the apprenticeship stage within the workplace – where the NVQ element can be assessed. Considering that it is a cheaper way to study then the Student can make practical savings from the start. It is fair to say that long before the Student Entrant the Self Employed Entrant can gain financial benefits through establishing certifications faster and by being more commercially motivated.

It is by covering the study needs along with those of a clear careers discussion that meet the financial rewards. It would generate serious hardship, for example, for an adult requiring 20k p.a. (to provide for their family,) to go back to college and spend 3 years in low-paid apprenticeship work. It should also be borne in mind that many young Student Entrants have their studies paid for them as part of their overall apprenticeships, whereas the self-employed student generally funds the course themselves. It is often the course structure and the level of certification that can run into costs of around 3k-10k+.

For the most part, Student Entrants will study at recognised further-education colleges, whereas the Self Employed Entrant has the option to consider the wider range of private commercial schools. It is through well known educational paths that many commercial training companies can offer routes into correct qualifications and skill-set requirements. This method offers key advantages to Self Employed Students, allowing them to train evenings, part-time or on self-study classes thereby continuing with their existing jobs and maintaining their financial situation. Using the range of sources, it makes sense to gather as much detail as possible and through this be able to work out the training college that suits you best. We have provided adverts and links from several to allow you to come back and review your options, so why not book mark this page (CTRL-D).

To increase their ‘marketability’ many plumbing students will go on to utilise extra courses. Indeed it is through the added training provided that certification in areas such as Gas, Green Energy and Electrical can be gained. Forming part of the common domestic and commercial heating system, Plumbers have often opted for Gas Training.

With core subjects followed by NVQ’s, Gas Training is a thorough and exact training program. This considers ongoing development, especially for those who trained first as a plumber and are seeking extra skills. From this stance, the mature student is often more suited to a cross of Plumbing/Gas training. For the Mature Student the emphasis appears to be reducing the NVQ elements and focussing on the core subjects.

It is from this mix of training methods that the self-employed professional appears to benefit. To earn money whilst at the same time as gaining a wider range of perceived skills becomes a desirable prospect. It is by removing the reliability on third party sub-contraction that results in the increase of the industrial package. Sub-contraction needs to be handled carefully as the erosion of customer satisfaction by having to wait for key work to be completed by third parties can result in a serious reduction in potential earnings. To be fair the more talent a Plumber has in their own job then the more they have to offer their client base.

It is by working at their broader range of certifications alongside business skills that Self Employed Entrants can achieve much higher income streams that their Student Entrant counterparts. Note: This information refers to the UK industry requirement and their policies alone.

PC and network support staff are ever more sought after in the UK, as institutions are becoming more reliant upon their knowledge and skills. The need for such qualified and commercially astute people is growing at an impressive rate, as commercial enterprise becomes more and more reliant on computers.

The age-old way of teaching, utilising reference manuals and books, is an up-hill struggle for the majority of us. If this sounds like you, dig around for more practical courses which have a majority of interactive, multimedia parts.

Studies have consistently confirmed that connecting physically with our study, is far more likely to produce long-lasting memories.

The latest audio-visual interactive programs involving demonstration and virtual lab’s will beat books every time. And you’ll actually enjoy doing them.

Every company that you look at should be able to show you samples of their training materials. Expect video tutorials, instructor led classes and interactive areas to practice in.

You should avoid purely online training. Ideally, you should opt for CD and DVD ROM courseware where available, so that you have access at all times – and not be totally reliant on a good broadband connection all the time.

Kick out the typical salesman who offers any particular course without an in-depth conversation to better understand your current abilities and experience level. They should be able to select from a generous stable of training programs so they’re able to solve your training issues.

With some work-based experience or certification, you could discover that your appropriate starting-point is very different to someone completely new.

Where this will be your first stab at studying for an IT examination then you might also want to practice with some basic user skills first.

Be watchful that any qualifications you’re working towards will be commercially viable and are up-to-date. ‘In-house’ exams and the certificates they come with are generally useless.

You’ll discover that only industry recognised qualifications from companies such as Microsoft, Cisco, Adobe and CompTIA will be useful to a future employer.

So many training providers are all about the certification, and forget what it’s all actually about – getting yourself a new job or career. Always start with the final destination in mind – don’t make the vehicle more important than the destination.

Avoid becoming one of the unfortunate masses that choose a course that sounds really ‘interesting’ and ‘fun’ – and end up with a certification for an unrewarding career path.

Get to grips with what you want to earn and the level of your ambition. This can often control which certifications you’ll need to attain and what you can expect to give industry in return.

Sense dictates that you seek advice from an experienced professional before embarking on a particular training programme, so there’s little doubt that a program provides the skills necessary.

There are four specialised areas of training in the full CompTIA A+ syllabus, of which 2 passes are needed for your A+ qualification. However restricting yourself to two of the four specialities is likely to leave your knowledge base somewhat light. At least learn about all four – employers will notice the difference.

As well as learning how to build PC’s and fix them, students of A+ will learn how to operate in antistatic conditions, how to fault find, to diagnose and to remotely access problems.

It could be a good idea to think about adding the CompTIA Network+ training as it will enable you to work with networks, and have a more responsible working role.

Getting your first commercial position can feel more straightforward if you’re supported with a Job Placement Assistance program. The fact of the matter is it’s not as hard as some people make out to secure the right work – once you’re trained and certified; the shortage of IT personnel in Britain looks after that.

You would ideally have CV and Interview advice and support though; also we would encourage all students to get their CV updated as soon as they start a course – don’t wait till you’ve finished your exams.

A good number of junior support jobs have been offered to people who’re still on their course and haven’t got any qualifications yet. This will at least get you into the ‘maybe’ pile of CV’s – rather than the ‘No’ pile.

If you’d like to keep travelling time and costs to a minimum, then you may well find that a local (but specialised) recruitment consultancy may be more appropriate than a centralised service, for they’re far more likely to be familiar with local employment needs.

Many trainees, it seems, put a great deal of effort into their studies (sometimes for years), and then just stop instead of looking for a job. Sell yourself… Do your best to let employers know about you. Don’t expect a job to just fall into your lap.

Beware of putting too much emphasis, as many people do, on the certification itself. Training for training’s sake is generally pointless; you’re training to become commercially employable. You need to remain focused on where you want to go.

You may train for one year and then end up doing the job for 20 years. Avoid the mistake of finding what seems like a very ‘interesting’ program only to spend 20 years doing a job you hate!

Spend some time thinking about how much you want to earn and the level of your ambition. This will influence which precise certifications you’ll need to attain and how much effort you’ll have to give in return.

All students are advised to talk with an experienced professional before they embark on a retraining path. This gives some measure of assurance that it features what is required for the career path that has been chosen.

Considering how a program is ‘delivered’ to you is often missed by many students. How many stages do they break the program into? What is the order and at what speed is it delivered?

A release of your materials stage by stage, as you complete each module is the usual method of releasing your program. This sounds sensible, but you should take these factors into account:

Maybe the order of study insisted on by the company won’t suit you. It may be difficult to get through every element inside of their particular timetable?

For future safety and flexibility, many trainees now want to insist that all study materials are delivered immediately, and not in stages. That means it’s down to you in what order and how fast or slow you’d like to work.

Traditional teaching in classrooms, involving piles of reference textbooks, is often a huge slog for most of us. If this describes you, look for learning programmes that are multimedia based.

Many studies have proved that memory is aided when we receive multi-sensorial input, and we take action to use what we’ve learned.

Interactive full motion video involving demonstration and virtual lab’s will beat books every time. And you’ll find them fun and interesting.

You must ensure that you see examples of the study materials provided by your chosen company. Be sure that they contain video demo’s and interactive elements such as practice lab’s.

Some companies only have access to training that is purely available online; sometimes you can get away with this – but, consider how you’ll deal with it if your access to the internet is broken or you get intermittent problems and speed issues. It is usually safer to have actual CD or DVD ROMs that removes the issue entirely.
